Are the top ten health fears of women justified? Good question. I saw a Harvard Medical School Special Health Report titled Women’s Health Fifty and Forward which answered that question.  The results will surprise you.

So here is the video with the results.

OK. So what steps can to take to improve your odds of staying clear of the three surprising causes of death from the top ten health fears of women? Heart Disease, Lung Cancer and Stroke.

How to Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease

  • Engage in aerobic activity at least 30 minutes a day for 5 days or more each week
  • Keep your cholesterol in check.  Watch your LDL and raise your HDL.
  • Improve your diet.  The DASH or Mediterranean diets might be a good place to start.
  • Keep you blood pressure in check.
  • Reduce your risk of Diabetes and reduce your blood sugar if it’s high.
  • Do we even have to add this one? I hope not. DON’T SMOKE….PLEASE!

How to Reduce Your Risk of Lung Cancer

  • First…it may surprise you that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women.
  • As with reducing your risk of heart disease – DON’T SMOKE….PLEASE!
  • Avoid exposure to environmental toxins & fumes. Have your home tested for radon.

How to Reduce Your Risk of  Stroke

  • Women ages 45-54 are more than twice as likely as men the same age to suffer a stroke.
  • Follow all the advice above for reducing your risk of heart disease!
  • Watch your salt intake.  If you’re over 50 you probably want 1,500 mg or less per day of sodium.
  • Look at the labels if you eat processed foods and meals…you will be surprised with the sodium content.
  • Watch your weight and maintain a healthy BMI.

These guidelines will help you.

After all, we want the women in our lives to be a round for a long time leading a healthy and active life!
